Recent cuts at iHeart creating anxiety
Houston Radio personality Sarah Pepper recently left radio to take care of her mother, and wanted to reassure her radio friends that there is life after radio. She had written this list for me to read at the Mental Health panel at Boot Camp, which I did. And I thought after last week’s cutbacks, it would be a good idea to post here.
Here’s what you bring to the radio and will also bring to your next career:
You are good at multitasking. Honestly, you are built differently. My first two days I was done with all my tasks by noon because we just work at a different pace.
Believe in how talented you are. You have the gift of storytelling. Don’t take it for granted. Not everyone has that gift.
You have transferable skills. Companies are begging for compelling storytellers and as the corporate world is transitioning into social media, podcasts, audio recaps of quarterly reports.
You are a broadcaster and a salesperson. You may not think of yourself as a salesperson but you are.
You think outside the box because you have never been in one. The ideas you have in your head (that you think are basic) will blow corporate companies away.
You are on the forefront of everything new, including AI.
You have an entrepreneur's mind and heart. You can side hustle with the best of them.
Accept that nothing is permanent. Tom Hanks gave a great speech on how this too will pass. You’re sad, this too will pass. You’re angry, this too shall pass.
Don’t mourn people in your life who disappear the moment you are no longer beneficial to them. They weren’t your friends to begin with.
Cherish each day you crack that mic. You don’t know when the last day is. I never thought my mom’s health would be the reason I left morning radio, but it happened and adapting, adjusting and finding your passion in something else has been the best peace to my soul. I get to spend more time with my family than I have in 20 years and I am eating it up every day… because nothing is permanent.
You’re awesome… keep showing up!
