Vulnerability with a little ‘v’
Being vulnerable on the air doesn’t necessarily mean revealing your deepest, darkest secrets (which would be “Vulnerable with a capital V”). Being uncomfortable, putting yourself out there, stepping out of your comfort zones — those are all “vulnerability with a little v” and are excellent ways to connect with people.
When was the last time you did something for the first time? Getting out of your comfort zone makes you more interesting, both on the air and off. Whatever makes you uncomfortable – that’s what you should be talking about. It makes you relatable, even if it makes you feel vulnerable.
Here is a recent example, with easy action steps for you to follow:
Choose a direction. Could be training for a marathon, practicing for a five-minute stand-up monologue, or conquering a lifelong fear, like Miguel Fuller. Miguel, from Miguel & Holly, Hot 101.5/Tampa, was afraid of the water. On a recent vacation to the Caribbean, he decided it was time to conquer his fear, so when he got home, he signed up for swim lessons at the local YMCA.
Bonus points for a local connection. Florida leads the country in the number of drownings per year.
Your “journey” becomes serial content. As Miguel shared his “journey,” listeners rooted for him, cheering him on.
Create a final payoff. His final lesson at the YMCA was to go down the water slide. Of course he brought his phone with him, posting the video for socials.
Tie in news coverage. If you choose something impactful in your community, you can guarantee additional media coverage. The local TV station spotlighted Miguel’s lessons as a way to encourage adults to be safe in the water.
And finally, think of the life-changing impact you might have. He said, “I got a really emotional message from a listener who had a son drown the day before his third birthday. She hoped that because of my story, other parents will get their kids swimming lessons.”
